Skin care during winter

Winter is harsh on our skin for mutiple reasons. It’s usually dry in Melbourne anyway and then we are exposed to more air-conditioning (heating) than usual.

Most people will also turn up the heat on their showers and this adds to the drying effect.

Many skip their sunscreen in winter and the resultant sun damage can add to the inflammation.

When I think winter skin, I think dry and peeling. I have naturally dry skin anyway so I like to pre-empt this by turning down the heat in my home, my showers and even at work. I’m the annoying colleague turning off heaters everywhere.

I like to use a hyaluronic acid serum/cream every day and top it off with a face oil. I let these sink in and then apply my sunscreen on top.

I also continue my face peels during winter, sometimes more often than summer and this helps renew my skin and keep it hydrated and shining.

If you have oily skin rather than dry, this might be too much for you. But as a rule of thumb, chemical peels will help with any skin type.

The most important thing to remember is that the sun and UVA/UVB rays are still damaging and ageing skin, so please use your sunscreen regardless of clouds, temperature and weather.
